Zippo is a dog that is easier to handle when he’s loose. In the dogyard, he is a blur of movement, and at the truck he barks the entire time until we start running. When free, he is always near, and usually calmly trotting around, ready to launch his face at my teeth. .
.
Zippo’s need to be loose was first pointed out by someone else. When standing with a Quebec sprint musher, Erik LaForce, Erik looked at Zippo, barking insanely at the truck and said ‘can he be loose? He wants to be free.’ We were parked in a place where it was safe for him to be free, no cars around. Immediately he quieted and calmly trotted around the truck, eventually just standing around the other dogs quietly.
There are a lot of guesses as to why he is so calm when loose, but I think it comes down to the fact that he needs space to move.

Zippo arrived almost exactly a year ago, from Jessica Hendricks in Alaska. He was the superstar of the race season, notably spending the last 45 minutes of our rest at the Can Am 100 barking to go and displaying the same remarkable recovery time at the UP200. He was sponsored this year by Chris Garby at Cooper Hill Axe Works.
