Zippo

When I asked Jessica about why she was selling Zippo, a dog that raced with her, had no injuries, and had all the other 'right' characteristics, she said simply 'he's too happy.' Hailing from Jessica’s Iron Pearl Kennels in Alaska, Zippo is tough, driven, fast and has the best recovery time of any of the dogs, bouncing back after tough races as if nothing happened.

Zippo has become famous among musher friends for his constant impatient barking. I used to be more bothered by it , thinking that he was wasting energy as he stood and barked incessantly, until during the UP200 vet check I learned that even while he was barking and flailing….he actually had a resting heart rate. It also helped when I learned that the easiest way to get Zippo to be quiet is to let him loose during set up, where he just trots around in silence until it’s time to go. He is a true team dog, uninterested in rank, only interested in running.

Zippo is an all-round great dog, found anywhere in the team but especially serving in point to drive the speed. Nothing ever phases Zippo, his head locked in forward position. With his recovery time and drive, Jessica wished she had taken a full team of Zippos to Iditarod.

Zippo ran and raced in the team for two years, and is now happily zooming around MN with the women of Ice Ties expedition, who reached out to me about adopting an elder statesman in 2019.

Zippo was a litter themed with ‘Z’ dogs, including siblings Zephyr.

Zippo fathered the ‘Jersey Shore’ Litter with Aurora, 9 pups born in 2019: Jameson, Bruce Springsteen, Riptide, Skee Ball, Tappan Zee, and Squan (and Coppertone, Dough, and Carlson who are with other kennels).
