Available sled dogs for adoption

Sled dogs decide to hang up their harnesses at all ages! This year I have two youngsters who decided being a sled dog wasn’t for them.

You can reach out via social media, or send an email: get in touch.

You can read more about the dogs who have been placed here.

Thank you to the many great humans who have become friends, who have provided a soft couch to land for these beloved athletes over the years.

Dundalk

Dundalk is a two year old sweetheart looking for a pet home. Dundalk is unbelievably smart, and was nicknamed ‘boy genius’ as a puppy, he loves puzzle toys. Being unbelievably smart, maybe too smart for his own good, meant he overthought everything about being a sled dog rather than just enjoying the ride. Dundalk is neutered and is great in the house, and eager to please. He’s great loose with excellent recall, and would make an excellent hiking and life companion.

About adopting a sled dog:

  • While there is no set fee for adoption, sponsoring a current team member is a great way to pay the energy forward.

  • Like adopting any dog, there will be a series of phases of adjustment periods: the first 30 days, the first 6 months, and then the first year. It requires incredible patience and understanding from you.

  • I work with all the dogs as best I can to make them ready for pet life, from off-leash hiking to being in the house. I can’t test them in every environment (I don’t have kids for example!).

  • One of the things that distinguish sled dogs is that they understand a purposeful human-dog relationship and are looking for direction from you. They usually bond intensely with their person, which might be one member of a couple or a family—just a pre-warning!

Lucan

Lucan is a gorgeous dog, he’s is also two years old, and in addition to being a great pet dog, he would be an excellent ski or bike joring dog. Lucan is an incredibly special dog, he’s got a very stoic and attentive presence and was a favorite of mine since birth. Because I knew it could turn him into a mama’s boy, I was very careful not to spoil him as a youngster. As a young dog he showed promise in lead, and knows his commands. Lucan, while he loves his job as a sled dog, does not love being a racing dog in long distance races—over time the stress builds up for him and he’s just too sensitive. As with all my dogs, Lucan is trained to be off leash and has excellent recall, and is also a very non-reactive dog to other dogs and people. Lucan could also do well in a recreational sled dog team that goes less than 20 miles. Lucan has spent some time in the house, but was mostly confused about what to do with his giant body. Lucan loves benebones.

Oriana

I’m putting this out there, and seeing if there’s the perfect person for Oriana. Oriana is 9 years old, and has been on the race team since a yearling. Oriana is a fuzzy happy healthy girl, who is excellent loose and a perfect angel in the house. Selfishly I had previously convinced myself that I could keep her, and I maybe still can, but the best place for Oriana would be a pet home where she could be the center of someone’s world. Oriana is very shy with people she doesn’t know, and would do best with a woman. It would take a little bit of time to bring her around, but what I’ve seen with other folks is she does come around.
