Throughout the off-season, Sally and the Shady Pines dogs do select educational presentations that are open to the public. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the dogs, learn more about racing, and get some hands-on experience. All events listed here are open to the public and free of charge.

She's the Top Dog: Stories of Women and their Dog Teams

For more on the 'She's the Top Dog' concept and project, read here.

In developing the content of this presentation, I was asked to present and convey my own story, but I believe that the stories of as many and as varied women as possible is important.

The reason why is I took this approach is because it could be easy to generalize ‘what it means to be a woman’ in the mushing world. It is through sharing personal and diverse stories, told by women in their own voices, that we can continue to foster a culture of confidence, honesty, and equity in the mushing world. (And maybe in the world in general?).

Mushing is a gender-neutral sport, where the emphasis is on skill and the origins are in survival. The stories that have emerged through this project are of moments on the trail, the lessons learned from dogs, and from the lives led. It is a rich fabric of life, told by voices who just happen to be women.

Shelburne Town Hall, Shelburne NH: Thursday, April 6th. Doors open 6:30, presentation starts at 7 p.m.

Randolph Town Hall, Randolph NH, Saturday August 12th. This will be following the Randolph Mountain Club Annual Meeting.

Sled Dogs of the White Mountains

Location and date TBD, White Mountain National Forest

This is our annual presentation as part of the White Mountain Interpretive Association's speaker series at the White Mountain National Forest campgrounds. While traditionally we present at Dolly Copp Campground in Gorham, NH, the site is undergoing renovations so we will instead be at either the Russell Pond campground or Campton Campground. This presentation is a hands-on chance to meet the dogs, stand on the sled, and ask any and all questions about training, racing, and more. This is usually one of the most popular campground presentations.
