Bumpus

‘Most unstoppable force’, Bumpus is a tank—large, stocky, and thick headed. Bumpus is probably the happiest and least complicated dog of his siblings, rolling along through life without a care or fear in the world. Bumpus is love, simplicity, and earnestness.

Bumpy has so far also earned the moniker of ‘most improved player’, as he was once impossible to not only harness, he was impossible to keep in his harness as he would fling his body around so much he’d flip out of his harness in seconds. A combination of patience from me, and figuring out how to keep him in his harness (no neckline, and wearing a half-harness) meant that after a dozen hookups he could have his neckline back, and a few more after that he was in a normal harness. Bumpus also can finally be loved on (almost) like a normal dog, instead of leading ‘teeth first’ with his affection he can now sort of sit on his platform and be hugged. He’s also one of the most consistent pups on the line—never having missed a run. Good boy, Bumpy.

The Bumpus Basin extends below Mt Madison in the Northern Presidentials, a trail less expanse of spruce-fir and tumbles of rock. For a period of time in my 20s, the Northern Presidentials were my backyard and home. Ever since my neighbor/ landlord had a cat named Bumpus, I have held onto it as a favorite name.
