Foxtrot

Sponsored by Barbara McCarragher and Robert Harrison

Foxy Fox is a sweet flop-eared boy, and very connected to people. Fox, and his brother Swing, came from Sylvain and Manon’s kennel sell out in Quebec. When I first got in touch with Sylvain, Foxtrot was being considered by another musher who was ahead of me in line. When that musher turned down Foxtrot, who Sylvain had called his best dog, Fox was offered to me and of course I snatched him right up.

Foxtrot is serious, kind, and very focused, and unbelievably disciplined. Both Fox, and his brother Swing, get along with everyone and are 100% focused on their jobs. Sylvain reminded me that I have shared the trail with Foxtrot before, in the UP200 and the Wilderness Race in 2017.

As with most new dogs, I wait awhile before putting them towards the front. With Fox, and his brother, they were quickly in the front end because of their seriousness, focus, and sheer size. The first time I put Foxtrot in lead, at the end of the run he was so thrilled that he got to do his job for the first time in the team.

In lead, Foxtrot is a happy go lucky boy who is totally focused on the trail ahead, but with zero idea of directional commands. When I got him, I knew that as older dogs they would only be in the team for a short while, but needing leadership and experience it was a decision I needed to take. For the coming winter, I expect Fox to spend most of this coming year leading puppy teams and leading the second team in races, before retiring to join his brother at Kate Ray’s Dogsled Maine tour kennel!
