Mattock
‘Most likely to be arrested’, Mattock as a puppy had devilish instincts but without the stealthiness to pull it off. Like, we can see you, Mattie, trying to break out of the pen.
Like her mom, and honestly her dad, Mattie self-launches at your face and is a little suspicious of people she doesn’t know. When I bred her parents, while colors don’t really matter I was really hoping for what I called the ‘Red Jax’—the color of Squan but the style of Jax. And that’s pretty much how Mattie turned out.
Mattock had the most untraditional upbringing of her classmates, when she broke her leg as a six month old puppy. As a tiny unformed thing, I felt her future taken away from her, but thanks to the surgical team at Maine Vet center and a pin that is the entire length of her marrow, Mattie and her robo-leg are ready to take on the world. During the healing process, she was both an adorable and a frustrating house puppy—adorable on the couch but eventually growing frustrated with confinement. This extra one on one time has of course led to a higher level of bonding with her, and as she’s been running in the front end almost the entire season she has a bright future ahead. Every time I see her charge forward, I give thanks for her presence in the team.

A pick mattock is my desert-island trail tool: it can lever, it can dig, it can pick. If you know, you know what these tools are capable of (and remember do not crank on the handle, you step on the mattock).
